Monuments / Monumental

1224 W Loyola Ave, Chicago IL
September 19, 2019 - September 23, 2019

A continuous series of tableaux vivants, Monuments / Monumental centers on the empty bases of former Lenin monuments filmed in villages and cities across Ukraine in 2016, removed from the era of 90s post-independence up until the beginning of the 2015 de-communization laws. With their Lenins removed, the bases remain as public architectures in public spaces, sculptures in themselves, awaiting new futures while constantly acknowledging their past and present.

Kandis Friesen’s work is anchored in diasporic language, dispersed translations, and disintegrating archival forms. Working across video, sculpture, installation, and text, her interdisciplinary compositions build from architectural, material, and spectral inhabitations of exile, amplifying minute and myriad histories at once. Monuments / Monumental will be projected each evening after dark, visible directly from the street.
