“Conventionality is not morality. Self-righteousness is not religion. To attack the first is not to assail the last...” Jane Eyre was one of my favorite childhood books. As I grew up, I appreciated the sentiments of the preface more profoundly. I once quoted some of it in a rare letter to my father, who was very religious and would not be persuaded by my reading suggestions, even though he also read constantly (but only ‘real’ stories, not fiction). This is a composite mixed media piece using photo references of my daughter who looked like me as a child, and a man I know who slightly resembles my father. I've brought them together in this imaginary portrait.
